American Walnut and Gun Metal Twist Pen

AMERICAN WALNUT - Juglans

Mostly grown in the northern hemisphere, Juglans can reach 10-40 Metres (30-130ft) in height. They are used for timer. In addition the fruit is eaten and can be used to make oil. The fruit of Juglans are call Walnuts. The wood is very hard and dark in colour, it is mostly used in furniture. The fruits outer casing were used by Native American tribes to poison fish.

It would be hard to overstate American Walnut’s popularity among woodworkers. Its cooperative working characteristics, coupled with its rich brown coloration puts the wood in a class by itself among temperate-zone hardwoods. To cap it off, the wood also has good dimensional stability, shock resistance, and strength properties. Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Colour can sometimes have a grey, purple, or reddish cast. Sapwood is pale yellow-gray to nearly white. Figured grain patterns such as curl, crotch, and burl are also seen.

Pen #800 was turned at Marsworth on the Grand Union Canal on 23rd April 2017.
